Cloud LLMs are powerful, but they come with trade-offs: per-token costs that scale with usage, data leaving your infrastructure, and dependence on a provider’s uptime. Ollama lets you run open-source models (Llama, Mistral, Qwen) locally on your own hardware, giving you complete control over data privacy and zero marginal cost per token.
Why Run Models Locally?
Three reasons dominate. Privacy: regulated industries (healthcare, finance, legal) often cannot send data to third-party APIs. A local model keeps everything on-premise. Cost: at high volume, a self-hosted model has zero marginal cost per token — you pay for hardware, not per request. Control: no rate limits, no model deprecations, no surprise price changes. The trade-off is that local models trail frontier models in reasoning quality.
Getting Started with Ollama
Ollama makes running local models remarkably simple. Install it, run ollama run llama3.1, and you have a model serving an OpenAI-compatible API on localhost. You can point your existing LangChain or OpenAI-SDK code at it by changing one URL. Models are quantized to run efficiently on consumer GPUs or even CPUs, and Ollama handles model management, versioning, and serving.
When Local Beats Cloud
- High-volume, low-complexity tasks. Classification, extraction, summarization — tasks where a smaller model suffices.
- Privacy-sensitive data. Anything covered by HIPAA, GDPR, or internal compliance policies.
- Air-gapped environments. Manufacturing floors, secure facilities, offline applications.
- Development and testing. Run a model locally during development to avoid API costs.
